Bella Hadid calls for racial inclusivity in fashion business, considers post-pandemic protocol

Bella Hadid is gracing the August 2020 cover of Elle magazine — and she’s keeping it real about racism in the chiffon trenches.

In the feature, titled “Bella Hadid, Live From Quarantine,” the magazine’s fashion features director Véronique Hyland gets the 23-year-old supermodel to open up about diversity, or lack thereof, in the fashion industry.

“Going into the next (fashion) season, my fear is having to see another one of my Black girlfriends get her hair burned by a hair straightener, or do her own makeup because the makeup artist hasn’t been trained to work with all different skin types,” Hadid said.

“I hate that some of my Black friends feel the way they do,” she continued. “Even if they’re sitting front row, they’re not feeling accepted.”

The woman considered “the most beautiful woman in the world” called out the systemic racism that permeates throughout the business. “Our industry is supposed to be about expression and individuality, but the reality is that (many people) still discriminate because of exactly (those differences).”

The Dior beauty spokeswoman was photographed by her older sister, model Gigi Hadid, at the family’s Pennsylvania farm for the first digital edition of the international lifestyle magazine.

The breathtaking images was captured on an iPhone 11, as Naomi Campbell did by using her iPhone’s self-timer for her Essence magazine cover earlier this year.

Hadid, who shot a campaign for luxury French label Jacquemus through FaceTime in April, is also conscientious about how business will be done post the COVIC-19 pandemic.

“Moving into the next season, I hope we can find a proactive way to move forward in a safe, healthy way,” she told the magazine. “I think that our sets will be smaller and more intimate, which will be nice for a change.

“We’ll also need to be aware of not using the same makeup brushes at shows and implement many other health regulations to keep people safe,” she added.

“There is a lot to learn and a lot to do, but I feel with the right people, fashion can change everything.”
