Planted cctx
While working at her first job at Golden Corral at 16 years old, Tina Turman gained a positive work ethic, discovered a natural ability in sales and knew she was able to take control of whatever she’s given.
Born in Houston, Turman, 33, moved to Corpus Christi in February 2021 and opened Planted cctx eight months later.
The indoor tropical nursery offers people confidence in plant care, Turman said.
“Plants are an investment,” Turman said. “A lot of people have misconstrued feelings toward plants and think they will kill them. It’s sad, but I’m a support line for you. I will help you pick the right plant for you.”
Only in business for less than a year, Planted cctx came out swinging and continues to grow and earn its spot in Corpus Christi.
Meet the owner
Q: What was your reason for creating Planted cctx?
TT: It was very odd that Corpus is a major city of Texas and we don’t have a boutique plant shop. It’s bewildering. Houston, DFW and Austin has multiple shops. I wanted to bring that here, and honestly I was dying to be part of the plant community here.
Q: What recommendations do you have for first-timers who want to start into horticulture?
TT: Go talk to your local nursery and plant people and find out what’s best for you. There are plants for all different types of people. The forgetters and the over-lovers — there’s a plant for that. There’s a plant you can forget about for a month and it will be fine.
Q: What has been the high point with Planted cctx?
TT: It’s been the overwhelming sense of community Corpus has given. I’m being able to give back, and it’s so mutual. When someone recognizes me, I freak out. It’s so wild to me. But Corpus is wonderful for small businesses. I really want to be a part of the community that helps other people achieve their dreams. It was so hard figuring out how to start a business. I spent months putting together a business plan. I got in touch with some great people here at the (Del Mar College) Small Business Development Center here in Corpus. I was assigned a free business adviser and I’m able to call on him for any question I have.
Q: What has been the low point with Planted cctx?
TT: I think I’ve been very fortunate with the community responding so quickly. Some people told me it would take a while for my business to get noticed, but we came out really strong. There’s been stupid things that have happened like things stolen from behind the store, but that’s just part of the business.
Q: How would you say plant life and gardening helps people with their lives?
TT: First thing, they’re producing oxygen. They have energies and vibes. If you have a green plant in (sight) while you’re working, it’s supposed to help. There’s a lot of benefits in owning a plant.
Q: What is your personal business philosophy?
TT: The difference between me and a plant you’ll get at Lowe’s or Home Depot is I take pride in my work. I’m not going to sell you a plant that has a pest. I make sure I give people a good product. I don’t want you to have a bad memory from coming to Planted.
Q: What are your future goals with Planted?
TT: I want to continue to grow. As a control freak, it’s hard for me to let go and pass on responsibilities. I really want to take on more interior-scaping. It’s my favorite thing to do. I get to bring the artist out of myself. Eventually, I’d like to have a bigger shop but that’s years down the road.
Q: What is the best advice you can give someone who wants to start their own business?
TT: Talk to your friends who own small businesses. Don’t be afraid to ask them questions; you are not bugging them. Hit up the Small Business Development Center and get a free adviser. It’s not going to hurt.
